چکیده
Interaction between antigen and antibody modulates key biological processes in neutralizing and eliminating pathogenic microorganisms following infection. The strength of this interaction depends on the affinity, valency and three dimensional arrangements of the interacting epitopes and paratopes. The measure of the overall strength of this multimeric interaction is termed as ‘Avidity’. Development of antibody with high avidity is a crucial feature of a secondary immune response followed by a low avidity antibody producing primary response [1,2]. Thus antibody avidity has been used as a marker for B cell maturation and is an important surrogate for determining long term immunological memory responses to pathogens. In our article entitled “Study of avidity of antigen-specific antibody as a means of understanding development of long-term immunological memory after Vibrio cholerae O1 infection” we showed that antibody avidity after infection and immunization is a good correlate of the development and maintenance of memory B cell responses to V. cholerae O1 antigens. To the best of our knowledge this is the first study that assesses antibody avidity following a non-invasive mucosal infection [3].

Study of avidity of antigen-specific antibody as a means of understanding development of long-term immunological memory after Vibrio cholerae O1 infection.
The avidity of antibodies to specific antigens and the relationship of avidity to memory B cell responses to these antigens have not been studied in patients with cholera or those receiving oral cholera vaccines. We measured the avidity of antibodies to cholera toxin B subunit (CTB) and Vibrio cholerae O1 lipopolysaccharide (LPS) in Bangladeshi adult cholera patients (n = 30), as well as vaccin...
متن کاملCholera toxin-specific memory B cell responses are induced in patients with dehydrating diarrhea caused by Vibrio cholerae O1.
BACKGROUND Infection with Vibrio cholerae induces durable immunity against subsequent disease, a process hypothesized to reflect anamnestic immune responses at the intestinal mucosa. The presence of antigen-specific memory B cells may therefore be a more direct measure of protection than serum antibody responses. METHODS We measured immunoglobulin (Ig) G memory B cells specific to cholera tox...
متن کاملMemory B cell responses to Vibrio cholerae O1 lipopolysaccharide are associated with protection against infection from household contacts of patients with cholera in Bangladesh.
Vibrio cholerae O1 causes cholera, a dehydrating diarrheal disease. We have previously shown that V. cholerae-specific memory B cell responses develop after cholera infection, and we hypothesize that these mediate long-term protective immunity against cholera. We prospectively followed household contacts of cholera patients to determine whether the presence of circulating V. cholerae O1 antigen...
متن کاملMemory T-cell responses to Vibrio cholerae O1 infection.
Vibrio cholerae O1 can cause diarrheal disease that may be life-threatening without treatment. Natural infection results in long-lasting protective immunity, but the role of T cells in this immune response has not been well characterized. In contrast, robust B-cell responses to V. cholerae infection have been observed. In particular, memory B-cell responses to T-cell-dependent antigens persist ...

Infection with Vibrio cholerae and oral cholera vaccines (OCVs) induce transient circulating plasmablast responses that peak within approximately 7 days after infection or vaccination. We previously demonstrated that plasmablast responses strongly correlate with subsequent levels of V. cholerae-specific duodenal antibodies up to 6 months after V. cholerae infection. Hence, plasmablast responses...
